(Looking for fossils in the West Runton Forest Bed) - 2002
The best time to collect fossils at West Runton, is after high tides, heavy rainfall and scouring conditions. Fossils are exposed on the forest bed surface which can easily been seen and collected. After a very high tide and during scouring conditions, mammal remains are often found. However, even if the conditions are not favorable, with a small knife or pick you can very gently break apart the loose material at the base of the cliff section.

Most of the small mammals, seeds, bird and fish remains are best collected by taking material back for sieving. Recommended type of sieve is an Endecotts 0.5mm Mesh Size, this prevents any smaller mammals such as voles slipping through the mesh. Wet Sieving is also highly recommended.
